Red Box Project

Fellow AIR, Camille Bonham, and I visited the Boys and Girls Club of Gaffney to facilitate the creation of a stop-action animation by the children at the club. We visited a total of seven times. Each meeting had a different amount of participants, all children were from 4th to 5th grade. The class swelled to 14 or 15 to sometimes only 4 or 5 students. After several days of explaining the basics of animation, we spent most days filming with the children taking turns doing the directing and the camera work. The students acted as machines to pass a red box through the camera frame. Each student ten recorded the sound that their machine made. After all the footage and soundtrack were compiled, a video was edited together. The project culminated with a screening of the animation for everyone including the staff of the Boys and Girls Club.

FLF: The Thesis Portfolio

FLF was the thesis project of Mark Rice while attending RISD. There are several different versions of the project. First and foremost is the FLF Portfolio with a total of 88 prints. Here is a somewhat long-winded explanation from the mouth of the creator, Mark Rice.
"My recent work is an illustrated narrative of a creation myth about my own philosophy towards art making. This book, entitled “FLF,” is written from the point of view of a man named Kevinator. The book works as a posthumous account of Kevinator's final months after a large explosion traps him in the place of his employment. Symbolically, it is a parafictional and metaphorical account of my two years of graduate school at the Rhode Island School of Design.
Set against a post-apocalyptic landscape, this tale describes the adventures of a man, conveniently named Kevin, dealing with his own issues of fear and inspiration while battling his new environment, where he is seemingly the sole inhabitant. Renaissance engraving, pop culture, autobiographical accounts, and science fiction form the inspiration for this epic tale.
The illustrations for this work are produced by means of copper and wood engraving. The technique of engraving was historically used in the documentation of sculpture, jewelry, and in the reproduction of oil paintings and frescos to a wider audience. Engraving employs the carved line to reinterpret a work of art. After the image is incised using a burin, the carved material (usually copper or steel) is inked, and finally impressed into paper. The inherent discrepancies of an engraving from the original object of documentation are large. I have come to appreciate this discrepancy and hold it as a metaphor for the subjective quality of memory as well as the seeming impossibility of true objective documentation.
An invented language accompanies the illustrations in this text. This language, called Rungish, is a written dialect of English created for those with a distrust of language’s inherent ability to disseminate and demystify. This language demands an empathetic collaboration that bears a striking similarity to the relationship I seek in speaking through images. It seeks a slower and more reflective read as a method of reestablishing trust in the mutual responsibilities of communication for author and reader, artist and viewer."

Keep an eye open for the FLF catalog, which is currently in the works, featuring reproductions of all the prints as well as analysis by writers and artists alike.

The average American makes two trips to buy groceries each week, making supermarkets, mini-marts, and corner stores essential and incredibly influential parts of our everyday lives. All items are bought and sold at these stores using money. Money is earned through labor, and labor comes in countless different packages, much like our food. Through our labor we are inspired and we are exploited. We progress and we are repressed. We survive.

Art is created through labor, but unlike some of the more negative forms labor takes, art stimulates our minds, challenges our imaginations, and expands our vision for the world. Art is at the center of humanity’s continuous evolution, but it remains extraordinarily undervalued by mainstream American society, which is almost solely focused on the seemingly endless cycle of labor and consumption. This limited view of life is slowly eliminating our ability to imagine, dream, and think freely.

Through C A R T, Current Gallery is positing that art is not optional, but essential. It affects all of us internally, whether we are aware of it or not, and it should therefore be considered as fundamental to our daily lives as the products we purchase at grocery stores every week. Therefore, Current Space will be transformed into a fully functional mini-supermarket, complete with aisles, window displays, shopping baskets, and cash registers in an attempt to explore the exchange of artists’ labor for profit in a familiar, everyday setting

"Fun on a Bun," the most recent soiree at the Goatmother Habitation Cabin Porch Pod, went off without a hitch! Hot Dogs were consumed and information was passed between patrons, creating situations to smile, nod, and respond. A spirograph generator was purchased at a dollar store (for one dollar!) which made for a pile of circular -patterned leavings at the party's conclusion. Five are displayed below....anonymously. Thank you.
